Ernest was the eldest of three children (sons) of John (Jack) Ernest Sullivan (born 1883 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Amelia (Milly) Russ Palmer (born 1891 at Booval in Ipswich, QLD). Jack, a Coal Miner, was working as a Motor Driver in Bundanba, Ipswich, QLD in 1914  when he married Milly - a Shop Assistant. Jack and Millie raised their family in Bundanba, Ipswich, QLD where Jack was a Coal Miner.

Ernest was a keen tennis player and member of the Ipswich Rifle Club (with his father) and was working as a Carpenter and Joiner when he enlisted in the ACMF in 1941. He served as a Sapper (Service No:Q13888) with 7 Australian Field Coy RAE in New Guinea. He was Discharged on 1 October 1943 in New Guinea and enlisted in the AMF on 2 October 1943. Ernest served with 24 Field Coy RAE in New Guinea as a Sapper and Lance Corporal, and was Discharged in June 1946.

Returning to Bundanba, Ernest worked as a Joiner until his death in 1983.
