Bert was the sixth of ten children of William Newbery Swann (born 1869 in Cheshire, England) and Sarah Jane Stevenson (born 1886 in Brisbane, QLD). William was a House Painter in Toowoomba, QLD when he married Sarah in 1905. William and Sarah moved around the Darling Downs region (Toowoomba, Pechey, Warwick Crows Nest, Kooralgin and Milmerran) where William worked as a House Painter, Engineer, Engine Driver and Labourer. He died at Milmerran in 1927.
Bert started work as a Farm Labourer at a young age and was at Captain's Mountain in Milmerran on the Darling Downs when he enlisted in the ACMF. He served as a Trooper (Service No:Q104009) and was attached to 11 Motor Regiment when he was Discharged in June 1942 (Medical - an old knee injury). Brothers Samuel William (Service No:QX10449), Edmund Joseph (Service no:QX16907) and Arthur Newbery (Service No:43461), and Brothers-in-Law Kenneth George Oliver (Service No:QX52167) and Alfred Mansfield Holloway (Service Nos:Q66175/Q122233/QX39483) also served in WWII.
Bert returned to Milmerran following his Discharge and was working as a Labourer when he married Ellen (Nell) Alice Foster (born 1928 at Streaky Bay in South Australia) in 1944 at Millmerran on the Darling Downs, QLD. Bert and Nell divorced in the late 1950's and Nell remarried. Bert moved to Dalby, QLD where he worked as a Plant Operator until the early 1970s when he relocated to Beenleigh, QLD. Bert died in 1974
