Rod was the youngest of three children of Kenneth (Snr) Edward Swindells (born 1894 in Boswell, Tasmania) and Kathleen Ann Proberts (born 1898 in Cairns, QLD). Kenneth was a Labourer on the Railways in Tasmania, and moved to Cairns QLD in 1915 where he was working as a Cane Cutter when he married Kathleen. Kenneth and Kathleen lived in Cairns, QLD where Kenneth worked as a Labourer at the Gas Works and their three children were born there. In 1937 the family relocated to Brisbane, QLD where Kenneth Snr was a Fitter and a Labourer until his death in 1953.
Rod was working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the ACMF in March 1944. He was a Private (Service No:Q202290) attached to 3 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps when he was Discharged in October 1945. Older brother Kenneth Jnr served in the ACMF from 1940 to 1944 as a Private (Service No:Q28269) attached to 3 Garrison Battalion. He was Court Martialled for going AWOL and sentenced to two years imprionment from 17 August 1944.
Rod continued to live in Brisbane, QLD with his mother and worked as a Labourer and Waterside Worker. In the mid 1960s he moved to Woolongong, NSW and worked as a Waterside Labourer before moving to Sydney, NSW in 1972. Rod worked as a Waterside Worker in Sydney until he retired. He died on the Gold Coast, QLD in 2003.
