Harold left Australia with the 27th Battalion on 30 June 1915 bound for Gallipoli where he fought until he went to Tel-el-Kebri in January 1916. He was sent to France in March. Harold was admitted to hospital at Doullent in France with chronic mid-ear disease on 15 June 1917 and was able to rejoin his battalion a week later. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in August 1917 and Sergeant on 11 July 1918. Harold fought in Belgium where he was awarded the Croix de Guerre on 4 April 1919. He returned to Australia on the Port Macquarie on 28 March and was discharged on 8 August.
