John was the youngest of 3 children of George William Tapp (born in Yorkshire in the united Kingdom) and Rosanna Lavina Price (born in Ipswich, QLD). John was 6 years of age when his mother died in 1916, and his father was serving in the AIF.

John worked as a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD and in 1934 married Jante Grace Harris in Goodna, QLD. John worked as a Labourer and Mine Labourer in the Darling Downs and Mount Isa in QLD until he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1941. He served as a Sapper (Service No: QX22395) with No 1 Section 2.1 Mechanical Equiptment Coy, with Lae PoW Garrison Coy, and with 141 Australian General Transport Coy.

Following his Discharge in 1946, John and his family lived in Innisfail in QLD where John worked as a Wood Machinist until his retirement in 1978.

John died in Innisfal, QLD in 1983
