Born in Toowoomba QLD in 1922 Sarah (Sadie) Thelander was the sixth of ten children of Peter George Thelander (b1890 in Yangan, QLD) and Ivy White (b1892 in Stannifer, NSW). Peter was a Farmer at Mt Perry nr Nambour QLD in 1913 when he and Ivy married. The couple settled at Palmwoods nr Nambour QLD where Peter was a Fruit Grower. In the mid 1920s the family moved to Crow's Nest on the Darling Sowns, QLD where Peter was a Baker and then in the mid 1930s to Wynnum, Brisbane QLD where Peter was a Baker. By 1940 the family had relocated to New Farm in Brisbane QLD where Peter worked as a Labourer before relocating to Melbourne, Victoria in 1949 where he was a Gardener.

Sadie was a Shop Assistant in Brisbane QLD in 1942 when she enlisted in the AWAS (Sergeant; Service No:Q142483) and was attached to LHQ Directorate of Research when she Discharged in August 1945.

In 1943 Sadie married Robert Harry Mathams MC(b1920 in Brisbane, QLD) in Wynnum, QLD - Robert was a Sergeant (Service No:QX33921). Following their Discharge in 1945, Sadie and Robert lived in Wynnum QLD where Robert worked as an Analyst's Assistant. By  1953 Robert had re-enlisted in the Australian Army and the couple left from Sydney NSW on board the Strathnaver bound for England, where they lived in Berkshire before returning to Melbourne, Victoria. By 1963 Sadie and Robert had relocated to Canberra, ACT where Robert was a Public Servant. Sadie died in Brisbane in 1998 and Robert in 2000.
