82 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 3rd July 1942, Private Henry George Fowles, referred to as Harry, 35th Battalion (Reg No-775), wharf labourer from 37 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. CONGREGATIONAL-2CNE. 52. Never married.

Born at Araluen, New South Wales on the 22nd January 1872 to Stephen, died 16.3.1920, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 84, from 37 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., and Martha Fowles, died 25.7.1923, Wickham, N.S.W., age 75, mother of 5, from 1 Cooper Street, Wickham, N.S.W., Harry enlisted on the 8th January 1916 at 44 years of age at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.

Admitted to hospital 28.7.1916 (synovitis right knee).
Commenced return to Australia 12.11.1916.

Harry arrived home on the 31st December 1916, being discharged medically unfit (arthritis right knee) on the 31st March 1917.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Mr. Fowles’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Newcastle Wharf Labourers Union Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies at Harry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
