Life Story Joseph Antoine Thouard


1897 Joseph Antoine (Tony) Thouard born 16.11.1897 Rotunda Hospital Dublin. Child of Demosthenes (Snr) Thouard married to Bridget Agnes Reddy. Registration of births shows name altered to Thourd with the ‘a’ crossed out of Thouard. birth certificate copy from Dublin Shows father and mother as Thourd at 57 Holly Bank Road born 16.11.1897. Died 3 July 1991. Stanthorpe Hospital aged 93 years.

1906 Winifred (Peggy) Edith Alderson 1906 born Liverpool. She was to become the first wife of Joseph Antoine (Tony) Thouard.

1914 Joseph Antoine (Tony) Thouard left Salesian College, Farnborough, Haunts UK.

1914? Joseph Antoine (Tony) Thouard enlisted in England at age of 17 in Kings Royal Rifles. Served mainly in France where he was wounded by a bullet in the thigh during the Battle of the Somme and was taken a prisoner of war. Graham Thouard, recalls being told that the soldier beside him was dead, the Germans were walking through shooting any wounded soldiers who were still alive. This German came along and saw that he was still alive but kept walking instead of shooting him and he became a Prisoner of War? Viv Thouard says: Regarding war service, I know nothing of Joseph Antoine Thouard 3rd war service but there is plenty of information on the Somme battle - probably the worst loss of life in the history of warfare. Being in the Royal Kings Rifles meant it was front line stuff. Samuel John Fisk’s war history can be read in a 17-page document from the Australian War Memorial.

1952 Joseph Anthony Thouard worked in the Army at Wallangarra as a Sergeant at 1 CAD (Central Ammunition Depot) or 5 COD (Central Ordinance Depot) up until 1952. He compulsorily retired age 55 and continued to work there as a civilian as a clerk in the Stores. He stayed there Monday to Friday in Quarters until around 1959 when he started travelling up and back each day on the Wallangarra Meatworks/School bus.

1962 Joseph Antoine (Tony) Thouard compulsory retirement as a civilian from Armed Services (age 65) 1 CAD Wallangarra.

1991 Joseph Antoine (Tony) Thouard born 16.11.1897. Died 3 July 1991. Stanthorpe Hospital aged 93 years. (a) Cerebrovascular accident (born) Dementia (c) Ischaemic. He had been a patient at the Stanthorpe Hospital since 25th April, 1988 (3 years) and Dorothy visited him nearly every day to feed him his lunch.
