Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of four brothers (Osmond, Bob and Albert) who served in WWII, Private Jonathan Ronald Tompkins (Service No:QX22479) served in the AIF with 11 Training Battalion from 23 July 1941 to 4 February 1942 (Medically Unfit).

Jon was born in Gympie QLD in 1907, third of ten children of Osmond (Os) Tompkins (b1879 in Matyborough, QLD) and Caroline Ann Jones (b1883 in Glamorgan, Wales) - Caroline immigrated in 1888, arriving in Maryborough with her parents and siblings on board the Dorunda. Os was working as a Labourer (licensed to cut firewood) when he and Caroline married in 1901 in Gympie, where they settled and raised their family and Os worked as a Labourer and Tmbergetter.

Jon worked as a Farm Hand in Mooloo via Kilkivan and Conondale via Maleny, and was working in Poona in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge in 1942, Jon worked at Bayrick Station via Augathella as a Cowboy before moving to Runcorn via Beaudesert in 1944. He was in Runcorn when he met Emily Kamore (nee Thorpe; b1895 in Nanango, QLD) - Emily was a Widow with three children (son Thomas Andrew Kamore; Service No:QX19803 was KiA in New Guinea in 1942). Jon and Emily married in Beaudesert in 1947, and lived in Runcorn, Meeandah and Banyo where Jon worked as a Farmer and Porter. Following Emily's death in 1962, Jon moved in the late 1960s to Tallebudgerra on the Gold Coast, where he died in 1974.
