Eldest of four brothers (Jon, Bob and Albert) who served in WWII, Sapper Osmond Tompkins initially enlisted in the ACMF on 1 June 1942 as a Private attached to 1st Garrison Battalion QLD - graded Axeman. On 14 May 1943, Sapper Tompkins was attached to 5 Australian Field Survey Coy when he enlisted in the AIF, and was attached to 1 Garrison Battalion (QLD) at Discharge on 4 May 1944 (Medically Unfit).

Osmond was born in Gympie QLD in 1903, eldest of ten children of Osmond Tompkins Snr (b1879 in Maryborough, QLD) and Caroline Ann Jones (b1883 in Glamorgan, Wales) - Caroline immigrated in 1888, arriving with her parents and siblings in Maryborough on board the Dorunda. Osmond Snr was a Labourer (licensed to cut firewood) in 1901 when he and Caroline married in Gympie, where they settled and raised their family and Osmond Snr was a Timbergetter.

Osmond was a Labourer in 1926 when he married Jemima Simpson (b1906 in Aberdeen, Scotland) - Jemima immigrated in 1924, arriving in Brisbane on board the Euripides. Osmond and Jemima settled at Cootharaba Hill via Gympie, where they raised their family and Osmond was a Labourer/Timbercutter. Osmond died in 1958 and Jemima in 1995.
