Flying Officer Herbert Leon Trout (Service No:275622) initially served in the Militia (Service No:420149) as a Private - Intelligence Officer - with 61st Battalion from 8 November 1938 to 19 January 1939. F/O Trout enlisted in the RAAF on 4 May 1942 at No 1 Recruit Centre as an Aircraftman I - Trainee Officer - and was commissioned in June (Pilot Officer) with the Administrative and Special Duties Branch. Appointed Flying Officer on 6 Decomber 1942, he served as Adjutant of No 75 Squadron in Milne Bay, and in 1943 as Adjutant of No 77 Squadron in Darwin. F/O Trout was attached to 1 Embarkation Depot at Termination of Appointment on 4 January 1944 (at own request to return to civil occupation). Older brother - Lieutenant Roy Trout - served with the Australian Flying Corps in WWI, and was killed while flying in 1917.

Sir Leon was born in Brisbane QLD in 1906, seventh of eleven children of Walter John Trout (b1872 in Brisbane, QLD) and Margaret Alice Storie (b1870 in Brisbane, QLD). Walter (a Butcher) and Margaret (a Pupil Teacher with the Department of Public Instruction) married in 1891 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family until they divorced in 1938. Walter was a Butcher until his death in 1939.

Sir Leon - a Solictor, Businessman and Benefactor - was articled in 1928 and admitted to the Supreme Court of QLD. In 1936 in Brisbane he married Peggy Elaine Hyland (b1916 in Brisbane, QLD), and the couple settled in Brisbane. Sir Leon (made a Knight Bachelor in 1959) was committed to his community and to industry, serving on numerous Boards and Committees, including for example, as President of the Liberal Party of QLD, the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce and the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Australia, and the Brisbane Club. Sir Leon served on diverse Industry Boards as Chairman and Director, and was Founding President and Trustee of the QLD Art Gallery. Sir Leon also served as President and/or Board Member of the QLD Society of Blind Citizens, the Royal Automobile Club of QLD, the Australia Britian Society and the Slavation Army, and was a patron of gymnastics. Sir Leon was appointed a Knight Bachelor in 1959 'for public service', and in 1977 was awarded a Silver Jubilee Medal. Sir Leon died in 1978 and Lady Peggy in 1988.
