Biography contributed by Elizabeth Mitchell

W.O.I. Vaughan
Charles Talbot Vaughan enlisted in the A.I.F. at Toowoomba in 1940 at the beginning of World War II. He was sent to the Middle East with the 9th Division 2/y Field Engineers where he fought in various conflicts including El Alamein and Bengazzi; he was a 'Rat of Tobruk.'
When the Japanese invaded Singapore in 1942, the 9th Division was recalled and sent to New Guinea, serving there until peace was finally declared in August 1945. The A.I.F. was then disbanded but W.O.I. Vaughan continued to serve with the R.A.S.R. In 1948-49, he was stationed at Rabaul and Manus Island during the Japanese War Criminal Trials. He stayed with the Army for eight years from 1940-58 when he was medically discharged at the age of 55 years.
