Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Youngest of the three brothers (Les and Eric) who served in WWII, Private Walter Henry Walk (Service No:Q14440) enlisted in the ACMF on 27 August 1940, and was attached to 11 and 16 Field Coys before embarking with 7 Field Coy on 2 February 1942 from Townsville for Port Moresby on board HMAT Macdhui. In March and April of 1944, Private Walk served in the Torres Strait Islands, embarking from Red Island Point for Merauke on 22 June 1944 on board the Islander. Private/Sapper Walk was attached to 27 Field Coy at Discharge on 23 April 1946. Older brother Les was KiA in Papua in December 1942.

Born in Bundaberg, QLD in 1920, Wally was youngest of four children (sons) of August Charles Walk (b1891 in Bundaberg, QLD) and Fanny Agnes Garland (b1880 in London, England) - Fanny, a Teacher (Piano and French) and a Dressmaker in London, immigrated in 1912, arriving in Townsville on board the Roscommon. August (a Labourer) and Fanny (a Domestic Servant) were both working in Cloncurry in 1914 when they married. The couple settled in the Bundaberg region (Bell's Farm, Bonna in Branyan via Bundaberg, Gooburrum via Bundaberg), where they raised their family and August was a Farmer( Sugar Cane and Dairy) and a Milk Vendor. During WWII, August was a Carpenter in Brisbane (Hut 1C Housing Area on Gregory Terrece), and later remained in Brisbane where he worked as a Watchman.

Wally was working at Gooburrum as a Cane Cutter/Farm Labourer before enlisting in the Army, returning there following his Discharge and working as a Cream Carrier. In 1952 Wally married Sheelah Magdaline Cahill (b1926 in Ipswich, QLD) - Sheelah was working in Allora as a Telephonist. Wally and Sheelah settled in Brisbane, where Wally was a Rubber Worker until retirement, when the couple moved to Caloundra. Wally died in 2018.
