Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

64 years ago today, on the 29th January 1960, Sapper Arthur John McGuire, 3rd Australian Light Railway Operating Company (Reg No-3013), cleaner from Inverell, New South Wales and Hamilton?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. CATHOLIC 3-81. 37.

Born at Inverell, New South Wales on the 13th April 1897 as McGUIRE to John and Elizabeth McGuire nee Mason, died 21.1.1945; husband of Dulcie H McGuire nee Chapman (married 11.6.1918, Inverell, N.S.W. as MAGUIRE, died 19.7.1959, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 65, sleeping here) of Port Kembla, New South Wales, Arthur enlisted on the 14th May 1918 as MAGUIRE and McGUIRE with the Railway Unit, April 1918 Reinforcements, at Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th July 1918.

Admitted to hospital 11.12.1918 (tonsilitis).

Commenced return to Australia 19.8.1919.

Arthur arrived home on the 9th October 1919, being discharged on the 25th October 1919.

I have not located Mr. McGuire’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Arthur’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.
