The above soldier is the only F. Patrick to have enlisted in the 1st A.I.F and may well be the person listed on the Balhannah Honour Roll. No definite link with the Adelaide Hills region was able to be established, as was the case with several soldiers listed on Memorial Rolls throughout the region.
Frederick left Sydney on board S.S. Hawkes Bay on 23 November 1915, bound for Egypt. He was admitted to the 4th Auxiliary Hospital in Cairo on 21 January 1916 with mumps and after treatment was able to rejoin his regiment, the 10th Battalion, on 9 February. In 1916 Frederick served as a driver for a short period in France. When serving in Egypt he assisted in caring for the regiment’s horses and after the Gallipoli evacuation had been completed Frederick transferred to the artillery serving with the 110th 4.5 Field Howitzer Battery until he was returned to Australia on the China on 11 June 1919 and was discharged on 3 August.
