Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Cecil John Waters (Service No:QX16216) served with 2nd/2nd Machine Gun Battalion from July 1940 to November 1945. He served in the Middle East (27 June 1941 to 27 February 1943), New Guinea (14 August 1943 to 4 March 1944) and Borneo (3 April 1945 to 5 November 1945), and was Discharged in November 1945.

While Cecil's Attestation Papers give his birthdate as 6 February 1920, his registered birthdate was 6 February 1923 (BDM QLD: 1923/C/1467) indicating he was seventeen years of age when he enlisted. Cecil was the youngest of four children of George Waters (b1881 in Morwell, Victoria) and Mary Josephine Cleary (b1892 in Gatton, QLD). George was a Farm Labourer in 1912 when he and Mary married in Gatton, QLD. The couple lived briefly in Melbourne, Victoria before returning to Brisbane QLD by 1915. George served in the AIF (Service No:3151) and the family lived in Gatton and Toowoomba on the Darling Downs, QLD where George was a Farmer and Labourer.

Cecil was working as a Salesman in Toowoomba, QLD in 1940 when he enlisted, and following his Discharge in 1945 settled in Brisbane QLD where he was a Salesman. In 1952 Cecil married Bridget Ellen Tuite (b1920 in Kingaroy, QLD) - Bridget was a Typist in Brisbane. By 1954 Cecil was working for QLD Post (he was a Postal Officer until retirement) and he and Bridget settled in Brisbane, QLD. Bridget died in 2001 and Cecil in 2006.
