Alexander Robertson was a single miner living in New South Wales. He was born in Carlton Victoria and was a Presbyterian by religion. Documents provided by the National Archives of Australia state that he was 23 years old when he embarked to fight in the 10 battalion. He was given 846 as his regiment number and 23/27/1 as his embarkation roll number. The unit embarked from Adelaide on board Transport A11 Ascanius on 20 October 1914.
The unit had been trained in Australia then moved to Egypt for further training until the Gallipoli campaign was undertaken. The unit was sent to land on the beach then later sent to the Western Front to take part in a trench warfare. Since Alexander was only a Private he was, like many others, required to live in and defend the trenches.
Alexander became ill with rheumatism and was invalided to Australia. He was discharged on 8 May 1916.
