Johnny was the fifth of nine children of Arthur Henry Wickerson (b1891 at Maroochy River, QLD) and Kate Sarah Boyce (b1895 in Ipswich, QLD). Arthur - a Farmer - and Kate married in 1914 in Nambour QLD and settled in Bli Bli to raise their family. Arthur and his brother Joseph served briefly in WWI.

Johnny was a Labourer in Palmwoods QLD when he enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:Q90744). He served with 49 Infantry Battalion (4 June 1941 to 26 November 1944) in the Torres Strait (3 February 1943 - 14 August 1945). On 25 November 1944 Johnny enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:QX62768), serving with 31/51 Infantry Battalion in the Solomon Islands (6 December 1944 - 15 August 1945) and Bougainville and Rabaul until January 1946. Johnny's father and uncle, brothers, cousin and brothers-in-law also served in WWII.

Discharged in April 1946, Johnny lived in Yandina and Nambour where he worked as a Labourer. He married in the 1970s and died in 2010.
