Born in 1921 in Brisbane QLD, Len was the first child of Melinda (Linda) Margaret Wieland (b1902 at Milford, QLD). Len was raised by his maternal grandparents (believing Melinda was one of his sisters until he was twelve years of age). Len's grandparents (Frederick and Agnes) lived at Milford nr Boonah where Fred was a Farmer.

Len worked at Bunjurgen nr Boonah as a Sawmill Benchman and was a Charcoal Burner in 1943 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge in 1945, Len married Audrey Rowe (b1921 in Broken Hill, NSW) in September that year and was a Farmer at Bunjurgen. By 1949 Len and Audrey were living at Tara via Goondiwind, where Len was working as a Timber Getter. The couple settled in Adelaide, South Australia where Audrey died in 1995 and Len in 2007.
