Biography contributed by Liz Williamson

When Ruby Wilkin was 16yrs old she fell in love with local boy James (Jimmy) Rubenach. The couple wished to marry but Ruby’s father decreed she was too young. When Jimmy enlisted and left for overseas in October 1915 no-one was aware that Ruby was pregnant. Jimmy was delighted with the news and on May 14, 1916, a tiny son was born, first named Percy Edward Wilkin. Over the next three years Jimmy and Ruby exchanged letters and photographs pending Jimmy’s return from the war. Sadly, Jimmy passed away 2 days before his ship docked in Australia. Jimmy’s death was a great blow to Ruby who later married Alfred (Alf) Williamson, and Percy took Alf's surname. Ruby and Alf had 5 more children.
