 Dr Harry Wilson graduated in medicine from the University of Queensland in 1940.  He was the top student in the first class of students to graduate from the University of Queensland, being awarded the Robertson Medal. In 1986 Dr Harry Wilson published a book “Medicine Without Tears: humanity and humour in the early medical school, Queensland" (see https://trove.nla.gov.au/work/18657657?q&versionId=21903345).

After a year as RMO (Resident Medical Officer) at Royal Brisbane Hospital, Dr Wilson served for 3 years as a medical officer in the Army, before being recalled in 1943 when his father died.  Dr Harry Wilson was sent home to take over the medical practice of his father, Dr Benjamin Gilmore Wilson in Ipswich, Queensland.

After 7 years working in Ipswich, Dr Harry Wilson went to England to continue his studies, achieving his MRCP (Member of the Royal College of Physicians) in London in 1951 and a FRACP(Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians) in 1957.

Dr Wilson completed his MA (Master of Arts) in Queensland in 1957, on the topic "The science of Rene Descartes : with special reference to his physiology" (see UQ https://search.library.uq.edu.au/primo-explore/fulldisplay?docid=61UQ_ALMA21103018780003131&context=L&vid=61UQ&search_scope=61UQ_All&tab=61uq_all&lang=en_US) 

In the 1960s Dr Wilson was he was appointed senior physician to Princess Alexandra Hospital, and helped found the Queensland Cardiac Clinic. He was also a director of Cromwell College at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, and served on the board of the Ipswich Grammar School for several years.

Dr Wilson's uncles, Harry Gilmore Wilson and Lindsay Gilmore Wilson served as ambulance drivers in World War I.  Harry Gilmore Wilson was killed at Pozieres on 23 July 1916 and is buried in the Puchevillers British War Cemetary.

Dr Harry Wilson's great grandfather, Reverend Benjamin Gilmore Wilson, arrived in Queensland from England in 1858, after an open invitation was put out for someone to take charge of the first Baptist Church in Queensland. He was both a medical practitioner and a clergyman.
