Private William Ambrose Wogandt (Service No:QX10862) enlisted in the Army on 20 July 1940 with No 3 Infantry Training Battalion and was attached to 2nd/26th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Melbourne for Singapore on 30 July 1941 on board HMT 'EE'. Reported Missing on 15 February 1942, Private Wogandt was confirmed a Prisoner of the Japanese 'A' Force held in Siam on 13 December 1943. Recovered from the Japanese on 6 October 1945, Private Wogandt embarked from Singapore for Sydney on 26 October 1945 on board the Moreton Bay, and was Discharged on 9 January 1946.
Born in 1907 in Bundaberg QLD, William was the fourth of eight children of Heinrich (Henry) Herman Wogandt (b1878 in Bundaberg, QLD) and Ellen Elizabeth Lynch (b1882 in County Limerick, Ireland) - Ellen immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1883. Henry (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1900 in Bundaberg, QLD where they settled and raised their family and Henry was a Labourer.
William was a Barber in Bundaberg QLD and in 1933 married Doris Matilda Annie Auer (b1907 in Bundaberg, QLD). In 1940 William and Doris were in Gin Gin, QLD when they Divorced. Following his service in WWII, William settled in Sydney NSW and in 1955 remarried to Clarice Margeurite Dore (nee Savage; b1901 in Nottinghamshire, England). William and Clarice lived in Sydney where William was a Hairdresser. William died in 1966 and Clarice in 1975.
