The Wood & Flynn families settled in Wooroolin in the early 1900’s. Their farms were either side of the corner of Woods Rd & Bunya Highway. William wood owned portion 230v on the corner of Bunya Highway & Woods Rd, next to the Jessen family on 242v and was name “Dangalo”. The Flynn Family were on Por 154v
Both families very involved in the building of the Wooroolin Catholic Church. In fact the Catholic services were held at the Flynn family home until 1913 when the Wooroolin Church was built. The marriage of William Wood & Molly Flynn in 1910 combined the two families. William & Molly had 6 children – Alf, Mary Phillips, Vera Taylor, Patrick, Raymond (Blue) & Leslie. All of their children attended Wooroolin State School.
William Wood is mentioned many times in newspaper articles as was involved in the Local Producers Assoc (LPA), School of Arts, Murgon Butter factory Directorate, & Kingaroy District Rate Paters Assoc to name some.
Two of their sons, Patrick & Leslie served in the Australian army during WW11 as well as their son in laws Geoffrey Philips and Charles Taylor.
Patrick Ernest Wood, known as Murphy, was born 22 Sep 1917 at Kingaroy. He attended Wooroolin State School. On 1 Jan 1945, aged 27 years, Murphy enlisted in the Australian Army and was assigned to 47 Australian Infantry Battalion. His army records are not yet available on the NAA website but he was discharged on 31 Oct 1945 as WW11 ended in Sep 1945.
On his return to Wooroolin he married Mollie Walsh and they lived at Tingoora where Murphy was a Shop Assistant, probably at Ham’s Grocery Store.
Murphy died in 2004 and is buried at Wondai Cemetery with his wife who died in 1992.
Leslie Michael Wood was born 22 Dec 1920 at Kingaroy. He attended Wooroolin State School. On 28 May 1941, aged 20 years, Lesley enlisted in the Australian Army at Wondai. His Army records are available on the NAA website and show that he enlisted in the 5th Light Horse and commenced training in Gympie. The same regiment as Fred Kapernick who enlisted in Jul 1942. On 24 Jan 1942 he was recorded as sick with Influenza and serving in the 5 Motor Regiment.
Motor Regiments were Motorised Infantry (Truck Mounted) battalions raised as part of the Armoured Division structure. Most were comprised of units and men that had formerly been Militia Light Horse pre 1941.
Leslie served within Australia including Townsville. He was discharged on 2 Dec 1943 and returned to Wooroolin and worked as a farm labourer per the 1949 electoral roll.
Leslie died in 1952, just 31 years of age and is buried at Memerambi Cemetery.
