Campaigns Served:   Egypt; Gallipoli; France

War Service/Promotions:  1 September 1914 he was a driver with A.A.S.C. Western Frontier Force, Egypt. On 20 December 1914 he was admitted to 1st Australian Field Ambulance, Pyramids, Mena Camp, Egypt, with influenza, and discharged back to duty on 23 December 1914. On 17 January 1915 he was promoted to Lance Corporal. On 5 April 1915: joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (M.E.F.), proceeding to Gallipoli, Turkey. The troops where held at Lemnos island until the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Then on 8 December 1915 he proceeded to join Western Front Force at Matruk (Iran). On 25 March 1916 he embarked from Alexandria, Egypt, disembarking at Marseilles, France, 1 April 1916. From 9 June 1916 to 3 August 1916, he was on leave in the United Kingdom from France, then rejoined his unit at Le Havre, France. On 4 September 1916 he was appointed Acting Corporal without pay, in the Field, France. By 16 December 1916, he was promoted to Temporary Corporal in the Field. On 22 January 1917 he was promoted Corporal, in France. On 27 April 1917 he was detached to No 1 Coy. A.S.C. and then 1 June 1917, rejoined unit. He was admitted to hospital with influenza on 26 May 1918, and was discharged back to duty on 31 May 1918, rejoining his unit in the Field. On 13 October 1918 he left Le Havre, France, disembarking Edinburgh, Scotland. Granted 75 days leave on 14 October 1918 (Long service furlough, 1914 Leave) in England. Then in England with No 1 Group until return to Australia. (10 August 1919 – At Parkhouse, Larkhill, Wiltshire; 21 August 1919, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire; 10 September 1919, Sutton Veny once again. (Medical report says he was fit, but these are two rehabilitation hospitals in England, where men were held for return to Australia). He was discharged in London, England on 11 September 1919, demobilised with effect 10 October 1919, in London, England.

Fate:   Returned to Australia per HT Bremen, 28 May 1920. Demobilised with effect from 10 October 1919. He married Laura Loane Hungerford, 18 September 1920, St Johns Church, Ashfield, NSW.

Medals/Citations:   1914/15 Star; British War Medal; Victory Medal.

Recommendation for Military Medal: 12 September 1916:  'Consistent good work. This N.C.O. has acted as Company Orderly and 'Runner' since April 20th, 1916, and has at all hours performed his duties thoroughly, consistently and most conscientiously.'  [It does not appear to have been awarded].
