19 Jun 1945: | Honoured Military Medal, Bougainville, On 22nd February 1945, in Mosigetta Area at Bougainville, 10 Platoon were in perimeter defence on a track junction on the Pikei Road. A party of enemy, armed with light mortors, light machine-guns, rifles and grenades vigorously attacked the position. The enemy attacked continuously for an hour, and were beaten off with heavy losses. QX56634 Pte Zupp, I.C. a bren gunner occupied a pit facing east, from which direction the strongest attacks were launched. During the attack,he displayed courage and coolness under fire, and was an example to the rest of his section. By efficient and deadly fire from his automatic, he assisted in breaking up the enemy attack accounting for at least two enemy killed. After being shot through the chest, he disregarded his wound, and by dogged perseverance, determination and sheer will power, continued to operate his bren accounting for two more enemy, until he collapsed from exhaustion. That he was able to keep his gun firing so long, was one of the deciding factors in the ultimate defeat of the enemy attack, and his outstanding courage and devotion to duty were the subject of great admiration from the rest of his platoon, and had served as an inspiration to them during the immediate action. | |
