Biography

Charles George ALLEN was born on 3rd March, 1921 in Cowra, NSW

His parents were Charles Elliott ALLEN and Florrie Adelaide MOORE

He enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force on 27th February, 1941- Service No.  35118 -Rank:  Aircraftman Class 1 - Trainee W/T Operator  3rd December, 1941, & promoted to Leading Aircraftman 1st May, 1942 as a carpenter then a Corporal on 1st December, 1943

He started training as Air Crew learning morse code, radio etc for a year & was transferred to the construction section as a Carpenter. His duties were to build prefab huts for war use and also other construction projects & maintenance.  He first went to Melbourne for training and then to Catherine in the Northern Territory and then to Darwin and was present on the outskirts of Darwin when the Japanese bombed Darwin.  He was also stationed in Brisbane and then transferred overseas to Moratai and Borneo

When the war was over there were no ships to return the men home but eventually he was picked up by an American freighter on 27th November, 1945 which took him to Brisbane where he then made his way back to the Central Coast of NSW by train & boat to see his family again & then to Sydney to see his intended bride Valerie

He married Valerie Phyllis DAWES on 2nd February, 1946 in St James Presbyterian Church, Burwood NSW & had two daughters Elizabeth & Rosanne

He was discharged from the Air Force on 19th March, 1946

His younger brother Kenneth Elliott ALLEN also served in WW2 in the Army

Charles died on 8th October, 2014 aged 93 years and was cremated at Rookwood - Memorial plaque located in the Rose Garden
