Cecil Alfred ASHCROFT (1893-1945)
Cecil Ashcroft was the son of Edward Joseph Ashcroft,. He had trained and qualified as a butcher in Liverpool, New South Wales, prior to enlisting on the 5th February 1917. His family owned a local business, E.J. Ashcroft and Sons (butchers).
He was a well respected member of the local community and was one of a number of men afforded a send off by the Liverpool Patriotic Committee on 7 March 1917.
Enlisting initially in the 12th reinforcements for the 1st ANZAC Mounted Division (Light Horse), in the Service Corps component, he embarked with them from Sydney on 2nd November 1917.
A synopsis of his service follows:
10 December 1917 Disembarked at Suez and marched in to camp
16 January 1918 marched out to Moascar
17 January 1918 marched into Australia Army Service Corps Training Depot Moacsar .
1 April 1918 Taken on strength, 32nd Company, AASC, Jericho, Palestine, .
15 June 1918 Attached for duty to 26th Depot Unit of Supply, ; absorbed on strength, 28 June 1918.
12 September 1918, detached to Jericho Supplies, .
3 December 1918 Admitted to 31st General Hospital, Abbassia, (pyrexia, unknown origin); transferred to Convalescent Depot, Boulac, 23 December 1918; discharged, 4 January 1919.
Marched in to AASC Training Depot, Moascar, 24 January 1919.
Rejoined 26th Depot Unit of Supply, in the field, 7 February 1919.
9 March 1919 Admitted to 24th Stationary Hospital, Kantara, (nasal obstruction); transferred to 14th Australian General Hospital, Abbassia, 13 March 1919.
19 April 1919 embarked HMAT Warwickshire at Port Said, Egypt for return to Australia
31 May 1919 Returned to Australia
He was discharged medically unfit on the 4th July 1919.
He returned to the family business after the war, and on 15 October 1921 he married Mary Brenda Rudd at St Mary's Cathedral
The suburb of Ashcroft was named after the Ashcroft family
