Biography

Frederick Christensen McNeil was born on 22 Jan 1920 in Coburg, Melbourne, son of John Duncan McNeil (master joiner/builder) and Mary Murray.  On 8 April 1936 Fred (or ‘Nipper’ as his brother Jim always called him) commenced his apprenticeship in London to Andrew Weir & Company, a shipping company commonly known as the ‘Bank Line’. Fred served on the Oakbank from 18 Dec 1936 to 16 May 1940, then served on a variety of merchant ships until discharge on 15 Jan 1946. He was married for some years to Marjorie Irene Wills.  He died on 2 Jan 1976.
