William Frederick Corbett MacNeil was born 16 Dec 1900 at Saltcoats, Ayrshire, son of John Duncan McNeil (master joiner) and Mary Murray. He migrated with his family to Melbourne in Nov 1912 on the SS Shropshire, living at 20 Sutherland St Brunswick West. He joined the naval and the army cadets, then signed on as an ordinary seaman on SS Rip in April 1915. He served with few breaks in the merchant navy until 1948, and received relevant service medals for WW1 and WW2. He married Josephine Cullen on 19 Jan 1926 in Melbourne. He died 9 June 1992.
