During his service with the RAAF Stewart held command appointments at the squadron, wing and group level. He spent four years in the United States working with the United States Navy on the F/A-18 Hornet and he was the inaugural project manager for the Lead-In Fighter program which saw the acquisition of the Hawk 127. Later in his career he was appointed as the Director of the C-130J program. He also held leadership roles in two Expeditionary Combat Support Squadrons and No 2 Airfield Defence Squadron as part of General Cosgrove's INTERFET Command. The squadrons secured and operated the airheads/airfields at Comoro and Baucau.

Stewart joined the Academy at the time Alteon (now Boeing Training and Flight Services) and the Academy commenced the Beta Test for the Multi-Crew Pilot Licence.
