2274 Private (Pte) Samuel Richard Best was from Footscray, Victoria of the 3rd Pioneer Battalion, AIF. Pte Best was a 25 year old wool classer prior to enlistment on 29 May 1916 and he embarked for overseas with Reinforcement 3 from Melbourne on 18 September 1916 aboard HMAT Karroo (A10). He was wounded in action (gassed) in June 1917 and spent a week in hospital before returning to his unit. Pte Best arrived back in Australia on 2 July 1919.
