John Cantwell joined the regular army in 1974 as a Private and over a period of nearly 40 years rose to the rank Major General holding the post of Deputy Chief of Army between 2007-2008. In 2010 he served a twelve-month tour as Commander of Australian Forces in the Middle East Area of Operations (Joint Task Force 633). He retired from the Australian Army on 7 February 2012 after 38 years of service. His retirement so far has been extraordinarily busy.
