Two people were killed in railway accidents in South Australia today. Leslie Norman Berresford, 49, single, of Anderson street, Southwark, railway guard, was killed at Aldgate about 3 a.m., and an elderly married woman, belived to be Mrs. Adelaide Dorothy Aldersey, fell under a train at Hove this afternoon. An engine crew found Berresford's mutilated body under the wheels of their engine in Aldgate railway yard. He had been working on a goods train bringing livestock from Balhannah to Mile End. At Aldgate a truck was shunted on to a spur line. The engine was backing when the crew lost' sight of Berresford's signal lamp, and alighted to see what had happened. They found his lantern about 30 ft. in front of the engine, and his body under the wheels. He is thought to have been killed instantly. The engine had to be shifted before his body could be removed. It was taken by ambulance to the City Morgue. Mounted Constable Robinson, of Stirling West, is preparing a Coroner's report..." - from the Adelaide News 08 Sep 1948 (nla.gov.au)
