Herman left Adelaide on the Seeang Bee on 10 February 1917, disembarking at Devonport, England on 2 May and was stationed at the 12th training Battalion at Codford. He proceeded to France on 16 July. On 31 August he was admitted to the 4th Stationary Hospital with tonsillitis but was able to rejoin the 48th Battalion on 8 September. Herman continued serving in France for the duration of the war. He returned to Australia on the Frankfurt on 1 July 1919, disembarked on 17 August and was discharged on 23 September.
