Add my storyBiography
Thomas Charles Handebo was the son of Thomas Charles Snr, of Armidale NSW. At 39 years of age, he joined the 1st Field Regiment, AIF, on 24 Dec 1941.
Although serving as an artillery gunner, Thomas never left Australia. He served 821 days, mostly in Sydney and the Northern Territory, and nothing is known of his activities or service during these years, apart from various injuries and illnesses from Casualty Records. It is known that not long after enlistment, Thomas was given leave without pay to attend to his divorce from Hilda Clarice Handebo (nee Piper). He was recorded as suffering a wrist fracture fighting fires at Waterfall, NSW, on 27 Jan 1944.
Thomas was discharged on 23 Mar 44, being, "...Required For Employment In An Essential Occupation"
Thomas was a deeply afflicted man, being estranged from his family for the remainder of his life. He remarried to Vera Mavis Mitchell.
