Alfred George Adie served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Lieutenant with the 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry. Second service was as a Captain with the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
When he first enlisted in 1899 with the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, it was noted he was married and from Clifton. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 2, it was noted he directed part of his pay to Mrs. Agnes Adie (his wife).
He was seriously wounded in action at Sunnyside on 1 Jan 1900 and spent several months out of action recuperating. While Murray in the AWM Nominal Roll compilation notes he was invalided to England in Nov 1900, this appears to be incorrect as the service paybooks note he departed from Cape Town, not invalided, on 16 Nov 1900 aboard Sophocles arriving in Brisbane on 19 Dec 1900.
In 1901 he was appointed as a Captain with the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, where it was noted that his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. Adie, Laidley. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 1 p. 5, it was noted he directed part of his pay to his wife Mrs. Agnes Adie, Laidley. He served the full tour of the 6th QIB returning with the contingent on the Devon to Brisbane where he was discharged on 23 Jun 1902.
Alfred George Adie was born on 1 Apr 1873 in Staffordshire, England, a son to Joseph Adie and Sarah Adie (nee Holloway). in 1878, at the age of 5, he emigrated to Queensland with his parents who settled in the Lockyer Valley where they engaged in farming. He acquired a farm at Clifton in 1897 and married Agnes Scott Hunter on 20 Apr 1898 in Queensland and they had 4 children. After returning from the war he continued to pursue farming interests in the Laidley district.
