George 'Poddy' Aiston
BIOGRAPHY OF GEORGE (PODDY) AISTON
George Aiston was born in 1879 at Burnside, South Australia, and joined the South Australian Military Forces in 1897. He served in the Boer War of South Africa in1899 and joined the South Australian Mounted Police in1901. As a Mounted Constable he worked in several country areas of South Australia and became interested in Aborigines when he was appointed Aboriginal Welfare Officer at Tarcoola. In those days, it was often the local policeman who was also the Protector of Aboriginals.
