Biography contributed by Helen Harmer

Robert Brodie Dewar was born in Glasgow. He listed his previous service as 5 years with 3LRV Rifles Glasgow and 4 years ASC Scotland. At his first attempt to enlist, he was rejected because of his teeth. 8 months later, he was accepted for enlistment at Perth on the 14.2.16, aged 29 years 11 months.  He was a clerk and Presbyterian. Initially a Private with the service number 25977, he was appointed Gunner on the 22.3.16 and served with the 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column FA Brigade. Robert was described as being 5 feet 8½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 33-36 ½ inches, fresh complexion, grey eyes and auburn hair. His father was dead, so next of kin was his mother, Helen Shields Dewar. Robert embarked from Melbourne on the HMAT Orsovo on the 1.8.16 and disembarked at Plymouth. On the 1.6.19 he returned to Australia on the Somali, disembarking on the 8.7.19 and was discharged on the 22.8.1919. After the war, Robert worked as an accountant for D. and J. Fowler Ltd., of Fremantle. Robert was an enthusiastic member of the Fremantle Caledonian Society and held various offices from time to time. He also took a keen interest in the Court Royal Oak Ancient Order of Foresters, an organisation that provided support for its members before social welfare existed and was Past Chief Ranger of that order. He was also secretary of the Caledonian Soccer Football Club, popular and esteemed, and was missed by a very large circle of friends. He was the beloved husband of Eunice Emily Dewar, of 111 Forrest-street, Fremantle East, and loving father of Bobbie. He died at East Fremantle on the 30.7.1929, aged 43, and was buried in Fremantle Cemetery Presbyterian Mon EE 0431, adjacent to the grave of his mother and brother.
