When Walter Andrew Anderson enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother, Ashton's Estate, Townsville. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 Pt. 2 p. 3, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. M. Anderson, Ashton's Estate, West End, Townsville.

Walter Andrew Anderson was born on 19 Oct 1878 in Queensland, a son to Alfred Joseph Anderson and Margaret Hannah Anderson (nee Chadwick). He married Ethel Roe on 16 Feb 1906 in Queensland and they had 3 children while living in Townsville.
