From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
87 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 6th November 1934, Private George Oldfield, 35th Battalion (Reg No-2370), labourer (B.H.P. Steelworks, Newcastle, N.S.W.), of 9 Georgetown Road, Waratah, New South Wales, father of six, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 57. METHODIST 4-07. 54.
Born at Paterson, New South Wales on the 22nd May 1877 to Charles and Charlotte Oldfield; husband of Elizabeth Ann Oldfield nee Davis (married 1905, Waratah, N.S.W., died 1943, also sleeping here, of 37 Georgetown Road, Waratah, N.S.W. and 8 Newcastle Street, Mayfield, N.S.W.), George enlisted May 1916 at Waratah, N.S.W.
George was invalided home November 1917, being discharged medically unfit (compound fracture of right ulna) on the 18th December 1917.
I have not located Mr. Oldfield’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I located George resting in an unmarked grave, apparently long forgotten, so February 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
A Plaque will be placed at the gravesite courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project to restore Honour and Dignity to George.
George's son Mervyn Henry (NX122679) served 2nd A.I.F.
Lest We Forget.
