Alexander John Arlidge was born on 25 Oct 1871 at Dunedin, NZ, a son to Frederick Jacob Arlidge and Mary Sutherland Arlidge (nee Allan). He married Rosabel Richards on 6 Nov 1901 at Dannevirke, NZ, and they had two children. When he enlisted with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen in 1900 for the South African (Boer) War he noted his N.O.K being in Dunedin, NZ.
