Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Also served in WW1- Private S.N. 1287, Camel Corps/4th Machine Gun Squadron AIF.

When Herbert Victor Armstrong enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father T. Armstrong, Loganlea. He was born on 27 Aug 1882 at Loganlea, Queensland, a son to Thomas Armstrong and Fanny Armstrong (nee Lahey). His mother had passed in 1896 and his father had remarried in 1898.

Newspaper reports indicate Herbert was discharged from the 5th QIB at completion of service in Mar 1902 in South Africa to allow him to take up employment there. The 5th QIB Boer War Service Paybooks appear to support this where, under his entry, it is noted his war gratuity was paid to him in South Africa. It is unclear what employment he took up there and when he eventually returned to Queensland.

His family was connected to the Murgon district and it appears he had taken up land at Barambah (480 acres) under a government "selector" scheme in 1906 and subsequently another selection in Murgon.

He married Martha Margaret Dreger on 12 Jul 1911 at Yengarie, near Maryborough, and they would settle in Murgon where they had 5 children. At the time of his marriage his father owned and was living on a property called "Loganlea" at Murgon. He involved himself in the community and was a competitor and member of the Murgon Rifle Club. Newspaper reports indicate they lived in Murgon until 1931 when they relocated to a farm believed to be at Tiaro. He was last living at Urangan.

When he enlisted for WW1 in 1916 he noted on his Attestation Form that; he was born at Loganlea; was married with 3 children; was living at Murgon; and had previously served in the Boer War. See bio by Zidane McNamara on profile for S.N. 1287 for further details of this service and period.
