Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When David Dalziel Arnold enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs D. D. Arnold, "Wyvernleigh", Manly.

David Dalziel Arnold (Jnr) was born on 11 Jun 1878 in Queensland, a son to David Dalziel Arnold and Kathleen Arnold (nee Tracey). He was seriously wounded during his Boer War service and apparently suffered life long effects.

He is interred in the family gravesite at the Tingalpa Christ Church Cemetery (also known as Tingalpa Pioneers Chapel Cemetery). Arnpld family descendants have erected a memorial plaque at the gravesite commemorating their pioneering family in the district of Manly, Brisbane, as transcribed below-

In Memory of Manly's First Family

The Arnolds of Wyvernleigh

The Arnold family's 250 acre property, Wyvernleigh, then part of Tingalpa, was cleared and farmed, and later divided into residential blocks and sold as Manly Beach Estate in 1882.

The first white child born at Manly was Mary Arnold in 1880. The first recorded death was her grandfather, James Mathers Arnold, who was killed by a falling tree in 1884.

David & Kathleen Arnold and their six children lived on at Wyvernleigh until David's death 1900, while his brothers James and John moved to the Brisbane Valley.

David's son, David Dalziel (Dallie), fought in the Boer War and was dangerously wounded, never to fully recover. Manly streets named for the family were- Arnold, Ernest, Jane (now Benalla), Dallie (now Oceana), and Mary (now Stratton).

Arnolds interred in the grave are James Mathers (1812-1884) and his wife Jane Dalziel (1823-1865) their son David Dalziel (1844-1900) and his wife Kathleen (1849-1939) their son David Dalziel (1879-1934), & possibly, in 1872, their twin daughters Mary Matilda & Sarah Jane, aged 9 weeks. Ashes only- James Kenneth (1919-2001) son of James Arnold and his wife Eona May- nee Dall (1922-2002).

Erected by Arnold Family Descendants 27-10-2007.
