Son of John O'Donnell and Jane O'Donnell nee Loney of Pynsent Street, Horsham, Victoria.
Brother of Edmond O'Donnell who was killed in action on 19 August 1916 while serving with the 57th Battalion and is buried in the Rue-Du-Bois Military Cemetery. Plot 1, Row G, Grave 23

Obituary-Trove 19 February 1924 reads:-
The death occurred at the Nhill Public Hospital on Wednesday of Mr.Samuel John James O'Donnell, aged 40 years.
Deceased was a native of Horsham,and before being admitted to the hospital was engaged in farming
pursuits at Rainbow. He served with the A.I.F. in France, where he was gassed and received gunshot wounds, which ultimately caused his death. He
was accorded a military funeral by the members of the R.S.S.I.L.A., when the remains were interred in the Nhill Cemetery on Thursday afternoon.
