Both Thomas and his brother Samuel had been kangaroo shooting in Central Queensland at the time war in South Africa had been declared. They both offered their services by telegram and when accepted they travelled to Sydney, where they arrived two days prior to the Regiments departure for South Africa.
Samuel’s records show he was born in 1875 at Molong NSW, his occupation on his attestation papers was listed as farmer.

Samuel was wounded during a battle at Klip Kraal on the 17th February 1900. He was invalided to England for medical treatment and returned to South Africa in August 1900. He eventually returned to Australia per the ‘Orient’ in January 1901.
