Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
Note- he was born William Paterson and took on the surname Barron when he was about 3 years of age when his mother married.
He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 82, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. Second service was as a Sapper S.N. 7345, Tunnelling Companies AIF, WW1.
When he enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in the Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private W. Barron, single, Westbrook Crossing, Warwick Line. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 10, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mrs. J. Barron (his mother), Westbrook Crossing, Toowoomba. He was returned from service to Sydney aboard S.S. Sophocles and then by train to Brisbane where he was discharged on 19 Dec 1900.
He was living and working in South Australia when he enlisted again in 1917 for WW1. On his Attestation paper dated 8 May 1917, it was noted that; he was born at Drayton, Qld, and was 39 years 4 months of age; he was married with no children and was a well borer; his N.O.K. was his wife Ellen Barron, Hackney (Adelaide), South Australia; and he had previously served in the Mounted Rifles 1st Queensland Contingent, Boer War.
His birth was registered under the name of William Paterson on 8 Jan 1877 in Queensland, a son to Jane Paterson. When he was about 3 years old his mother, Jane, married James Barron in 1880 at which time he took on the surname Barron. He married Ellen Hacker on 7 Aug 1912 in Queensland. It appears they had no children though he moved between a numer of State's for work.
His step-father passed in 1922 and in his obituary the list of those surviving him does not contain William by name. However, when his mother passed in 1932 her obituary contains him in the list of surviving children as, Will (NSW). His WW1 service record contains a Statutory Declaration dated 29 Mar 1936, in support of an application to Base Records for replacement discharge papers as originals had been lost with his suitcase while travelling by train from Brisbane to Sydney.
