Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Carl William August Baumann enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father F. Baumann, Vernor, Esk Line (via Lowood). In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 1 p. 27, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his father Mr. F. Baumann, Lowood.

Immediately prior to his enlistment he was serving as a Colour Sergeant on the permanent staff of the Queensland Defence Force and was appointed as a Company Sergeant Major with the 5th QIB for service in South Africa.

Carl William August Baumann was born on 20 Jan 1873 at Balfanz, Germany, a son to Johan Friederick Wilhelm Baumann and Mathilda Baumann (nee Schrann). He came to Queensland with his parents and siblings and was natualised as a British Subject on 23 Aug 1900 in Brisbane. He married Jessie Catherine Cheffins on 18 Dec 1905 and resided at Bowen where he was serving on permanent staff of the Qld/Commonwealth Defence Force, and by 1907 he was serving at Roma.

In 1911 he was serving as permanent staff with the Commonwealth Military Forces when he transferred to Victoria and was living at Moonee Ponds when he applied for a commission in 1916 for WW1. It appears however, he was retained on permanent staff in Australia in The Australian Instructional Corps. He retired on 20 Jan 1933 at the rank of S.R.S.M. Warrant Officer Class 1 having reached 60 years of age.
