Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When Percy George Benson enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father S. G. Benson, Wynnum South. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 123, it is noted part of his pay was directed to a joint account held with Mary M. Benson.
Percy George Benson was born about 1876, a son to Samuel George Benson and Marianne (Mary Ann) Benson (nee Bayley/Bailey). His father Samuel died in 1925 and in obituaries published in newspapers it was noted he was born in England and was a highly qualified musician (organist) who trained at the Royal Academy of Music.
It appears Percy arrived in Queensland from England with his parents about 40 years prior to 1925 residing at Townsville and Charters Towers until 1890 when they relocated to Brisbane. BDM Qld online records indicate the birth of one of his siblings in Qld in 1888, therefore, its assumed Percy and his other siblings were born in England.
Percy married Mary Maria Graham on 4 Mar 1901 in Queensland, just prior to him embarking with the 5th QIB for service in South Africa. She was the joint bank account holder noted in the service paybooks. He was last residing at Sandgate when he passed at the Brisbane General Hospital in 1945.
