Ernest Springbett was born 27 May 1895 in Wongolere near Williamstown, South Australia to Johanna Springbett. He had a brother, Edward Herbert Springbett whom he grew up with in Warilda, Williamstown (who also served in WW1). Before the war Springbett worked as a labourer in the Mount Crawford forests.
Ernest Springbett enlisted to the war effort on 31s December 1915 in Adelaide South Australia. He embarked upon the HMAT A67 Orsova on the 1st of August 1916 from Melbourne. After six months of service, on February 11th, 1917, Springett was taken on strength to the 1st Divisional Ammunitions column as part of Reinforcement 18 in France.
He served as a Driver in the 1st Divisional Ammunitions Column until May 11th, 1917, where he was detached to the 5th Army Cookery School. He returned to the Divisional Ammunitions Column the 13th of June 1917. On the 2nd of November 1917 he was sent to hospital for some time with an illness. He would then again visit hospital in June in 1918. On the 11th of September 1919 Ernest Harold Springett was detached for duty to the 2nd Infantry Brigade. He rejoined the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column 25 September 1918.
On June 29th, 1919, Springbett returned to Australia on the HT Nestor. He was discharged 14 August 1919.
After his return from the war married Eva Margaret Lane 20 February 1924 in Williamstown. Eva died 23rd April 1971. Ernest Harold Springbett died on the 16th of February 1996. He is commemorated on Williamstown St Peter’s Anglican Church and Mt Crawford Roll of Honour.
