Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Richard Bernard served twice in the South African (Boer) War and again served in WW1. First served as a Private S.N. 42 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen (Boer War), second as a Private S.N. 819 in the 1st Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse (Boer War), and third as a Private S.N. 1005 in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment (WW1).

Born in 1864 in Fitzroy/Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria, he was living and working in Queensland as a Stockman during all of his service periods (1900-1915). It appears that he lowered his age at enlistment on at least one occasion to gain acceptance. On his enlistment papers in 1902 for his second service he noted his age as 36, yet on his third enlistment (WW1) in 1915 (13 years later) his attestation paper noted his age as 42 years 11 months.
